DIGITAL FASTING

What is digital fasting?

Digital fasting means intentionally foregoing the use of one or more digital devices, platforms, services, features, or forms of digital media for a defined period of time.

It can include a phone, tablet, computer, television, streaming services, gaming systems, social platforms, email, or another part of digital life. A digital fast may be broad or focused.

01

Fasting, applied to digital life.

Fasting has been practiced in many societies and religious traditions for centuries. Its forms and meanings vary. People have also fasted outside religious observance for political, personal, and dietary reasons.

Digital fasting applies the familiar act of setting something aside for a defined period to digital life.

02

Digital fasting and digital detox.

Research and everyday language use several overlapping terms, including digital detox, digital disconnection, digital abstinence, and digital fasting. Definitions vary.

Digital detox commonly describes a temporary break from digital devices or online activity.

DIFFERENT FORMS

A digital fast can take different forms.

01

Broad

Pause personal use of digital devices and media for a defined period.

02

Focused

Fast from a device, category, platform, service, app, or group of apps.

03

Recurring

Repeat the fast on selected days or at scheduled times.

FASTS ARE PERSONAL

Fasts are Personal.

During a digital fast, people may turn their attention to faith, reflection, relationships, rest, focused work, exercise, creativity, time in nature, or another personal priority.

The purpose, boundaries, and length of the fast are defined by the person fasting.
